General History and Minorities in the US Census

This exhibit has three sections:

1. 1790-1800

2. 1830-1840

3. 1930-1940 (also includes recent census history)

The purpose of this exhibit is to explore the history of the US Census, and to think critically as to the structure of these census documents. When reviewing these sections, keep these questions in your mind:

1. How was the census structured?

2. Was there a group of people or peoples left out of the census enumeration?

3. Do the documents present any biases?
